Understanding conversion and conversion rate
A conversion occurs when a website or application visitor completes a predefined, valuable objective, such as submitting an inquiry, finalizing a purchase, or initiating contact.
For the chosen period, count users or sessions completing a defined action
Divide by all users or sessions in the same group
Multiply by 100 and state the calculation basis
Distinguish contact clicks, submitted forms and confirmed purchases
A measurement plan can be scoped through web analytics setup
Measurement and calculation rules
Measuring conversion rate requires specifying the numerator (completed target actions), denominator (total relevant sessions or visitors), and explicit evaluation timeframe. Without these defined parameters, percentage comparisons across campaigns remain misleading.
Hypothetical example
Suppose a page receives 4,000 sessions in a calendar month and 80 of those sessions include a confirmed form submission. In this hypothetical example, the session conversion rate is 80 / 4,000 × 100 = 2%. Repeated submissions in one session do not create additional converting sessions.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a universal benchmark conversion rate for all websites?
No, standard benchmark rates do not apply universally. Conversion rates vary heavily depending on product pricing, decision complexity, industry sector, and audience qualification.
