DNS definition and domain name resolution
DNS is a distributed system of records about domain names. It helps find a server’s IP address and other information, such as the mail servers for a domain.
A and AAAA records associate a name with IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
MX identifies servers that receive mail for the domain
TXT can hold verification values and email policies
NS identifies authoritative servers for the zone
Record changes and result checks can be scoped through DNS configuration services
Operational framework of DNS
Name lookups use DNS servers and caches. The answer depends on the requested record type and stored data that has not yet expired. After a change, different users may therefore receive different answers for a time.
Hypothetical example
Suppose a website has been prepared on a new server. Its A record changes from 192.0.2.10 to 198.51.100.25. As cached answers expire, lookups begin to use the new address; website files and databases need their own transfer beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
Does altering DNS records automatically migrate site files?
No, DNS record changes only adjust routing pathways. Actual website files, databases, and mail accounts must be separately transferred and configured on the receiving server.
